Messages for Attendees (Archive)

May 1, 2003

Hi All!

May 8 and the start of our LOEX conference is just around the corner! We thought we'd send you one more email with some updates that may be of interest as you make last minute preparations and plans.

First off, we now have a list of attendees for this year's conference up on our conference Web site ( http://loex2003.wisc.edu/attendees.html ). So you can check to see which of your friends are attending and make plans to connect with them for coffee or a glass of wine at one of the fun coffee houses or bars that we have listed on our Web site at http://loex2003.wisc.edu/madison/exploring.html

Don't forget our reception on Thursday evening from 5:00 - 6:30 in the Monona Terrace Conference Center. It will be a great way to connect with old friends and make new ones while enjoying a lakeside view, wonderful hors d'oeuvres, and music by the Expression Trio. You can pick up your conference packet and name tag either before or after the reception since the registration desk (also in Monona Terrace) will be open from 11 AM - 7 PM on Thursday.

For those of you who think you might want to catch a play or a concert or some more music at one of our many nightclubs, check out the online Events Calendar that our weekly Madison newspaper, The Isthmus, puts out. You can get to it from the "About Madison" page on our conference Web site: http://loex2003.wisc.edu/madison/

Wondering what clothes to bring? Well, the weather has been a typical Madison spring ranging from wonderful springy days in the 70's like yesterday to cooler, rainy days like today. So bring an umbrella and some layers and be sure to check out the local weather link on our conference Web site (http://loex2003.wisc.edu/madison/) before you start to pack.

And, finally, we are really looking forward to meeting all of you! We've prepared a Web page about our local committee so that you get a chance to learn a little bit about your local hosts before you arrive. We've included a photo, so you might even recognize us when you get here: http://loex2003.wisc.edu/contact_us.html. If you feel a bit overwhelmed by all the choices Madison has to offer and would like to know about some of our real favorites, click on the link to the committee's personal recommendations. Of course, we all wondered when any of us had time to do all these things but we agreed it was fun to think about what we would do on that perfect day off and to share our ideas with you.

Think that's it. If you have any questions, just let us know. Otherwise, safe travels! We're looking forward to seeing you next week.

Cheers!

March 19, 2003

Hi All,
Last weekend we had our first weekend with temperatures in the 60's--a sure sign that spring and LOEX 2003 are right around the corner! In anticipation of our upcoming conference, our local arrangements group has a few reminders and updates to share with you.

First, if you haven't made your reservations with the Hilton yet, please move doing that up to the top of your "to-do" list. The Hilton is holding our block of rooms until April 8 after which any non-booked rooms will no longer be held for LOEXers.

Second, a reminder if you haven't done so already to get your LOEX conference registration payment ($230) to LOEX by April 11. It needs to be at LOEX by 5:00 PM (EST) on that date. Details about how you can pay are available on our conference Web site at: http://www.emich.edu/public/loex/conferen/registration.htm.

Third, as you finalize your travel plans, please think about joining us (and all your fellow conference attendees!) for the opening reception that we've scheduled for Thursday (May 8) evening from 5 - 6:30 PM. It's going to be a great event! The reception will be held in the Community Terrace Room of the Monona Terrace Conference Center which is connected to the Hilton by a skywalk. The Community Terrace room literally hangs over Lake Monona so you'll have spectacular views of one of our loveliest lakes. We've arranged to have a jazz trio play for the reception and there will be great hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. So, you can enjoy a wonderful view, some great music, good food and drink and, at the same time, get reacquainted with old LOEX friends and start to make new ones. We hope it will be a relaxing, fun way for you to begin the conference! For more information about the reception (including pictures!) and updated information on the conference program, check out our conference Web site at: http://loex2003.wisc.edu/program.

Finally, a reminder to keep checking our conference Web site at http://loex2003.wisc.edu/ for other updates on the conference. We keep adding information, including, most recently, information about the program and breakout sessions.

That's all we have for now. We'll be in touch again as the conference gets closer.
Let me know if you have any questions that our Web site can't answer.

Cheers!

February 21, 2003

On behalf of our Local Arrangements Planning Group, we want to welcome you to LOEX 2003 and congratulate you on your successful registration! The registration process last Friday went very smoothly...and quickly! LOEX reports that 130 of you registered in the first 10 minutes!

We'll be sending you emails periodically between now and the conference with reminders and updates. For now, there are a couple of things for your to think about doing. First, a reminder that the conference registration fee deadline is April 11. Information about how to make your payment is on our conference Web site at: http://www.emich.edu/public/loex/conferen/registration.htm.

We recommend that you make your hotel reservations soon, especially for those of you who are planning to come a day early or stay a day late to do some sightseeing in our great town. We have a block of rooms reserved at the Hilton for the conference dates May 8-10 but if you're planning to spend some additional time in Madison, it's a good idea to book early.

The Hilton is a great downtown hotel with a skywalk connecting it to the Monona Terrace where our conference will be held. Every room in the hotel has a great view of either the State Capitol Building or of Lake Monona and there's a restaurant and lounge right in the hotel. More information about the hotel is available on our conference Web site at: http://loex2003.wisc.edu/travel_hotel.html. Be sure when you make your reservation to tell them you're with the LOEX conference so that you get the conference rate. For those of you who are looking for a roommate for the conference, you can send your inquiry to me and I'll post it to the group.

There are still some slots open for our preconference workshop on "Bridging Learning Differences," scheduled for Thursday, May 8, 1:00-4:30, so, please consider signing up. We think it's going to be an interesting and fun workshop! Vida Groman and Denise Jess, the preconference facilitators, did a similar workshop for our campus instruction librarians as part of last year's annual retreat and the response was enthusiastically positive. Many of us have used what we learned in the workshop not just in our teaching but in our meetings as well. For more information about the preconference, including the registration form, go to our conference Web site at: http://loex2003.wisc.edu/preconference.html. The deadline for registering for the preconference is March 21, but the limit is 40 participants so you may want to register soon to ensure a slot.

Finally, let me just add that we're delighted you're going to be joining us here in Madison. We're putting together what we think will be a great program on an interesting mix of topics related to reflective teaching, our conference theme. And, for your free time, we're creating several lists of fun things to do. Some of these are already up on the conference Web site at:
http://loex2003.wisc.edu/madison/index.html. We'll be updating the Web site periodically with news about the conference, so, please, remember to check there as questions come up for you. But if the Web site doesn't answer your questions, feel free to send me an email.

We'll be in touch again as other things come up. Looking forward to seeing all of you in May!
